So many flowers
From crane’s bill (Geranium) to common lungwort (Pulmonaria), and from coneflower (Echinacea) to Solomon’s seal (Polygonatum multiflorum). There are beautiful perennials to suit any garden, even those with lots of shade. After planting, perennials will grow back bigger, stronger and more flowery each year!
Flowers & leaves
Which colours do you like? Choose colours that make you happy. Some will like a mix of pink and blue with a touch of purple. Others prefer a real riot of colours. No matter which colour palette you choose, flowering plants look best when combined with foliage plants, such as Hostas, coral bells (Heuchera) and great forget-me-not (Brunnera).
Butterflies & bees
With flowering plants, you will also make your garden attractive to butterflies, bees and other insects. The bigger the variety in plants, the better. Vary with shapes, colours and scents, but particularly also with flowering times. Lungwort (Pulmonaria) blooms in early spring, for example, while Michaelmas daisies (Aster) form flowers from late summer until well into autumn. This is a great way to make sure that insects always have a source of food.
Tips & facts
- You will also be doing birds a favour with flowering perennials. Seed-eating birds will visit your garden to snack on the seeds after flowering. Other birds love to scratch amongst the plants in search of worms and insects.
- Many perennials will bloom a second time if you cut them back after the first flowering.
- Make your front garden or façade garden bloom as well with perennials. You will brighten up the entire neighbourhood!
