Perennials are the perfect choice for those who dream of a garden where they can relax amongst the greenery without having to do much work. Autumn is the ideal time to plant perennials: the soil is still warm and the plants have plenty of time to take firm root before winter. With little effort, you can create a garden blooming with life, colour and tranquillity. Ready to enjoy a low-maintenance garden?

Go wild

Your outdoor space is the place to let nature take its course. Go wild and plant a selection of your preferred perennials. Relax, let the plants do their thing and be pleasantly surprised by the different shapes and colours that emerge! Plants that grow nicely amongst other plants:

  • Lamb’s-ear (Stachys): A lovely plant with soft, grey-green leaves and spikes of purple flowers. Requires little water and is drought-resistant.
  • Jerusalem sage (Phlomis): With its striking whorls of yellow flowers and decorative seed heads, this plant is a real eye-catcher. It tolerates poor soil and drought well and can bloom for a long time without needing much care.
  • Coneflowers: A striking, low-maintenance perennial that blooms for a long time, attracts pollinators and thrives in the sun.
  • Daylily (Hemerocallis): Its colourful, trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom for a long time make this plant a must-have. It grows in almost any soil type and requires little attention.
  • Michaelmas daisy (Aster): Enjoy a plethora of star-shaped flowers. This hardy plant requires little attention and attracts many pollinators in autumn.
  • Field scabious (Knautia): Lushly flowering with dark pink to burgundy flowers on long stems.
  • Purple loosestrife (Lythrum): Does well in moist soil and blooms profusely with long pink or purple flower spikes.
  • Knotweed (Persicaria): With elegant pink or white flower spikes and decorative foliage, this plant easily adapts to different conditions. It is low-maintenance and blooms for a long time.

Give weeds no chance

Ground cover plants are great for a low-maintenance garden. Weeds will have little chance under their dense foliage and they can bring colourful cohesion to your garden.
Easy-care ground cover plants include:

  • Solomon’s seal (Polygonatum): With its graceful, curved stems and delicately hanging white flowers, this plant will add a touch of elegance to your garden. It thrives in the shade and requires little attention.
  • Old man’s beard (Clematis): This climbing plant also works as ground cover and produces a sea of colourful flowers. Perfect for adding a romantic touch to a low-maintenance garden.
  • Barrenwort (Epimedium): This plant’s heart-shaped leaves and delicate flowers make it a real eye-catcher. It grows well in shade and is ideal for under trees or shrubs.
  • Cranesbill (Geranium): This versatile perennial blooms profusely with brightly coloured flowers and spreads easily. It is hardy, requires little attention and effectively suppresses weeds.

Tips

  • Check the label for plant spacing. The planting hole should be more than twice the size of the root ball.
  • Once your perennials are properly settled, watering is only necessary during long warm periods.
  • Trim the edges no more than once or twice a year if you feel the plants are encroaching too much on the lawn or paths.
  • Spreading a mulch layer of organic material (such as compost or leaves) of a few centimetres around your plants will prevent weeds and is good for the soil.
